Historical Fast Facts on Cincinnati

  • The first settlement of the area was called Losantiville from 1788 to 1790. This name was given to the city by one of the founding fathers of the city, John Filson. The L in the name stands for a river named Licking. The title roughly translates into The Two Opposite the Mouth of the Licking. 
  • In 1790, General Arthur St. Clair changed the name of the city  to Cincinnati after the Roman General Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus who lived in the 5th century BC. 
  • Cincinnati was incorporated as a town in January 1802 and became a city in 1819. The first mayo of Cincinnati was I. Burnet.
  • As per popular belief, Cincinnati, much like Rome, was built on 7 hills  and is the county seat. 
  • Besides the Queen City, Cincinnati has also been called Porkopolis dating back to the time in the 1930s when it was a main pork processing center. 
  • The first professional baseball team of this city were the Cincinnati Red Stockings(later called the Cincinnati Reds) and were the first to travel via airplane to another city.
  • When it was constructed in 1867, Roebling Suspension Bridge was the largest one of its kind across the world and was a replica for the Brooklyn Bridge.
