History of Cincinnati

Cincinnati was first known as Fort Washington after the famous American president George Washington. In the late 1780s, it was named Losantiville and it was in the 1800s that this city was named Cincinnati. Interestingly, famous poet Henry W. Longfellow  named this the Queen City of the West. Churchill is known to have said that Cincinnati was one of the most scenic cities in the Union. Cincinnati has many famous celebrities including writer Harriet Beecher Stowe and boxing champion Ezzard Charles. It was also the first city in America to have a baseball team which was professional. Cincinnati was also the birthplace of the famous Proctor and Gamble created by William Proctor and James Gamble.   From the inventor of do it yourself cars Powel Crosley to Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary General of Cincinnati, many famous personalities have hailed from this city. Statue of Roman emperor Cincinnatus after whom the city was named giving the rod of power to the city’s founding fathers is located in Fort Washington, a city park.  Both Rome and Cincinnati are built on 7 hills and near a river. Just like the ancient civilization, the city too has gone from strength to strength.

This is one of the leading zoos in the United States. The Cincinnati zoo and its adjoining gardens are 140 years old. This makes it one of the oldest zoos in the United States as well. It has close to 2000 animals and 500 species  apart from spanning an area of 65 acres. From rare apes and chimpanzees to the California sea lion, this zoo has diverse fauna. The zoo has also held several records including raising the largest Komodo dragon in captivity.

Cincinnati Art Museum 

This is one of the most well known and oldest art museums in the country, founded in the 1800s. It contains over 65,000 beautiful work of art and has a Roman facade built by celebrity architect J. McLaughlin. Everyone from Picasso to Monet has been covered by this impressive art museum. Admission to this art museum is for free.

Taft Museum of Art 

This museum is a national historical landmark. It is also considered to be one of the top small art museums in the US. It is home to a fine art collection of American and European masters. Duke Energy Children’s Museum

John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge 

This bridge has been a symbol of Cincinnati since it was completed in the 1860s. It connects Cincinnati, Ohio with Covington in Kentucky state. The bridge also provides easy access to popular attractions. It was designed and constructed by John A. Roebling, the architect of the Brooklyn Bridge. This was the largest bridge at the time of its construction. The Roeblingfest is celebrated each year to celebrate the construction of the bridge. 

Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum

The Cincinnati Reds established this museum in the late 1950s to commemorate the city’s home baseball team. It celebrates the performances of team players, managers and executives apart from showcasing expensive baseball items in an area spanning 1400 square meters. There is also a behind the scenes tour for those who want to check out the ins and outs of American baseball.

Cincinnati Observatory
